The llms.txt Guide: A Site Manual for AI Crawlers

If robots.txt is the house rules for search crawlers, llms.txt is the site manual for AI crawlers: a Markdown file that states who you are, which pages matter and what is worth citing. It is an emerging convention that major AI crawlers are beginning to recognize.

What goes into llms.txt

  • One-line definition: brand + what you do + whom you serve — the anchor for AI understanding;
  • Core page list: product, solutions, pricing, contact — each with a link and a one-line note;
  • Category and article index: surface your most citable content with short summaries;
  • Facts and contact: email, phone, registration info, so AI can answer "how do I reach them".

Three writing principles

  1. Facts first: declarative sentences, not marketing adjectives — AI cites facts;
  2. Keep it in sync: update llms.txt whenever pages change; a stale manual is worse than none;
  3. Stay short: a one-screen guide beats a hundred-thousand-word dump.
  4. How to audit

    Open yourdomain/llms.txt in a browser and check three things: it loads, it matches your site, it covers every key page. Then ask an AI engine "what does X website do" and compare its answer with what you wrote.

    AiTion sites never maintain this by hand — llms.txt is generated automatically and stays in sync with the admin. That is what "GEO friendly" means by default.
